All my misgivings on the state of Ghana football and its administration notwithstanding, I will be one of the happiest local football fans if Medeama and Dreams FC make it to the league stage of their respective campaigns in this season’s CAF Inter Club competitions.
Both sides have quite an uphill task of eliminating their opponents in their backyards after their satisfactory results at home in the penultimate, preliminary round ties at home. Medema is in Conakry, Guinea for Horoya while Dreams is in Monrovia, Liberia to face FC Kallon of Sierra Leone.
Progress for both Medeama and Dreams to the league stage of the Champions League and Confederation Cup respectively will be the first time in years — more than a decade — that two Ghanaian clubs have reached that level of African club football simultaneously or in the same season.
I do not remember the last time that happened and that gives a pointer to how our clubs have performed in Africa over the last decade or more. The players and coaches of the two teams have done well with their very modest gains. There is more to be achieved.
The league stage may have been their initial target. It is within their reach. They must go for it. Their success will be good for Ghana football. Greater works or demands await them as they climb up. They must not look back. Go for the league stage tickets, Medeama and Dreams FC.
