Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Adams has had a mixed experience 62 days after being sworn into office. From the lovely moment of supervising two big wins by the Black Stars in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers to the unfortunate situation of a Nigerian boxer losing his life in a bout in Accra.

Death of an opponent in the ring is not something you would wish for your sworn rival but as life would have it, these things happen. When they occur, lessons must be learnt from them. Therefore, under Kofi Adams's diligent approach, a committee has been set up to investigate circumstances surrounding Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju’s death.

Before he swore in the seven-member committee which comprises accomplished personalities who have detailed understanding for their assigned task, our sports minister was praised by the Nigerian Board of Boxing Control for his responsible leadership in overseeing the matter with wisdom and tact.

Part of that is what has led to the establishment of the Amarkai Amaterfio committee, which has three weeks to complete its work and proffer recommendations for sanity in the Ghana boxing arena. The committee comprises diplomat, Major (Rtd) Amarkai Amaterfio (Chairman); former Ghana Boxing Authority President, Lawyer Peter Zwennes; ace Sports Journalist and avid boxing writer, Ekow Asmah.

The rest are retired Boxing Judge and Referee, Atta Eddie Pappoe; Lawyer and Sports Journalist, Samuel Bartel; Sports Medicine expert, Dr. Engmamn and Lawyer, Juliana Addo-Yobo (secretary). The committee’s composition is perfect. This committee members possess the requisite expertise to delve into the matter and advise on the way forward. I hope that the committee will receive the best support from all.
